Vivienne Westwood, a fashion designer who combined music and fashion to help define punk and who introduced rebellious politics to the runway, passed away on Thursday at the age of 81, according to her family. Some of the biggest stars in fashion were dressed by Ms. Westwood.
Ms. Westwood was born in Derbyshire on April 8, 1941, to a cotton mill worker mother and a shoe repairman father. According to The Guardian, her family relocated to London in 1957, where she spent one year attending art school. Ms. Westwood had no official experience in fashion and was a self-taught designer.
A few years later, she filed for divorce from her husband and began working for band manager Malcolm McLaren. Early in the 1970s, the pair built their first clothes store, Let It Rock, on King's Road in Chelsea, according to a BBC story.
Regular customers began to frequent the store, including McLaren's punk band clients Sex Pistols. According to the BBC, they became famous in 1976 while wearing Westwood and McLaren's creations.
Over time, the store changed, but at its height, under the moniker "SEX," the torn t-shirts, latex, and leather bondage gear became the provocative garb of a generation determined to smash the final social taboos.
In 1981, she held her first official fashion presentation. It became well-known as the Pirate Collection and became quite popular.
She became a full-fledged celebrity in the 2000s, creating wedding gowns not only for the affluent but also for well-known TV stars.
