Brittney Yevette Griner was born October 18, 1990 in Waco, Texas. She played college basketball for the Baylor Lady Bears. She is the only NCAA basketball player to both score 2,000 points and block 500 shots. In 2012, she was named All-American and Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.
Griner was seized by Russian customs officers in February 2022 after cartridges carrying hashish oil were discovered in her luggage. On suspicion of smuggling, she was later detained.
Griner had been travelling to Russia to compete in the Russian Premier League during the WNBA off-season.
On July 1, her trial got underway, and she admitted guilt. She was given a nine-year prison term on August 4.
Griner was moved to the Russian correctional colony IK-2 in November 2022.[13] At the time, US officials claimed that she had been "wrongfully detained."
Griner was released by Russia on December 8 in exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who had served 10 years of a 25-year sentence after being found guilty of planning to assassinate Americans.
